Wikipedia the well known online information collaboration may end the use of traditional encyclopedias, as the article Will Wikipedia Mean the end of Traditional Encyclopedias? suggests.
Just over 10 years ago, many homes had such encyclopedia volumes as Encyclopedia Britannica, nicely leather bound and on display for those to admire. Fast forward today where sales of these resources in book form are hard to find. Does this mean that traditional encyclopedias are not used. Not really. The form of which they take has changed but there content hasn’t.
The book form is no longer used, but encyclopedias’ information is still accessed via either cd-rom or internet portals. See, for example,Encarta and alsoBrittanica which has now gone online, recognising that information in hardcopy is not the future. Probably the main benefit which encyclopedias have over Wikipedia is that they are considered more accurate, reliable and better written. Wikipedia, although a good starting point in research, cannot be as well scrutinised, as anyone can add anything onto the pages.
