The Virtual Global Taskforce (VGT)

The Virtual Global Taskforce (VGT)is a global law enforcement initiative designed to track and convict people preying on children.

The Virtual Global Taskforce brings together law enforcement from around the world to tackle abuse of children on the internet with the aim of making the on-line environment safer for children.

The members of the VGT include: the Australian Federal Police; Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the US Department of Homeland Security, Interpol and UK’s Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre.

The work of the Virtual Global Taskforce is centred on developing high-impact, low-cost projects that delivers the mission of the taskforce, which is:

  • to make the internet a safer place.
  • to identify, locate and rescue children at risk.
  • to hold offenders appropriately to account.

Arguably we will see more organisations like the VGT in the future, operating to deal with global legal issues that may arise. Indeed, the United States has recently joined the Council of Europe Convention on Cybercrime which aims to address computer-related crime, including that which is conducted through the Internet. A fact sheet available from the US Department of State provides a bit of background on the organisation.
