Social networking the new craze to hit the internet world is a combination of a diary, personal ad and cyberdating. These websites help connect friends and strangers using blogs, profiles, internal email systems and photos. Users can disclose personal details such as marital status, physical appearance and which school they attend.
As you can imagine these are proving very popular with kids and young people. In fact, around 61% of 13 – 17 years olds have a personal profile on one of these sites.

Social networking has become big business. The sheer volume of traffic generated by social networking sites was bound to attract strong commercial interest and the recent sale of YouTube to web leviathan Google for $US1.65 billion is an indication of the direction pundits predict the industry will take into the future. This was a purchase of an entity that was yet to generate revenue and, in this sense, was somewhat speculative. However the market had already witnessed social networking site MySpace generate an annual revenue of $US200 million. This revenue is generated primarily from advertising placements.
