Can a general legal practice in Australia get by without the expensive subscriptions and software packages pushed on them by legal publishers and industry software standards?
The availability of case law and legislation on sites such as AustLII has certainly made the idea more viable than it was in the past. There is less commentary available and greater legwork is required on the part of the legal practitioner, but the resources are there, the content of the law is available. Free services such as FindLaw allow the lawyer to keep abreast of changes in the law and law libraries are always available when more intensive research is required. Even well resourced firms with multiple expensive subscriptions must still rely on law libraries for certain research.
